It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or have more expereince, gettign to klnow a consistent method that will always produce results is the best for you.
Let’s say you want to know how to draw cartoon heads for children.
No problem.
The Oval method.
If you are new to drawing cartoons then remember that it's important to get the outline right, details can follow later. It's the overal process and the development of your drafting skills that should have priority. Keep it simple and practise each step over and over.
We will start with an adult's head as these are more similar in shape than kids heads are in cartoons.
Begin by drawing your oval outline. Notice how it tapers slightly as you get lower.
Sketch in a lightly dotted vertical center line and a similar horizontal line that's a bit above the middle. |
 |
Your horizontal line is the eyeline. Draw in two eyes spaced equally form the center.
Add the eyebrows above them. |
 |
Now add a nose. Keep it in proportion to the overall face size, you can play with exaggeration once you have the basics cracked.
Sketch in the ears. Notice how the top aligns with the eyes and the bottom with the nose. |
 |
Now lets start a bit of fun. Add the mouth, a simple line will do. This guy has sunken cheeks so pinch in the lower part of your initial oval shape.
Up to the top and begin adding some hair, just a few suggestive lines to start with.
|
 |
Improve the hair detail and give it some shape.
Whan you are starting this is probably enough detail. Now remove the dotted alignment lines to clean up your image. |
 |
To get a real finish, though, add some shading to show the illumination and some creases to bring out the subject's character. |
